Cocamidopropyl Betaine
An amphoteric surfactant and foam booster .

Suitable for gentle rinse-off skin and hair formulations.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine, commonly known as CAPB, is an amphoteric surfactant widely used in personal-care formulations for its cleansing, foaming and co-surfactant properties. Commercial CAPB is usually supplied as an aqueous solution, with the active matter depending on the specific supplier grade.

CAPB is particularly useful as a secondary surfactant or co-surfactant. When combined with primary anionic surfactants, it can modify the overall cleansing characteristics of the system while contributing to richer and more stable foam.

One of its major formulation advantages is its versatility. CAPB works well in shampoos, body washes, facial cleansers, hand washes, liquid cleansers and solid cleansing systems. It is especially valuable when formulators want to create a balanced surfactant blend rather than relying on a single cleansing ingredient.

CAPB pairs particularly well with Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) for creamy, gentle-feeling cleansing systems. It can also be combined with Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSA) when increased foaming is desired, or with glucoside surfactants such as Decyl Glucoside for multi-surfactant cleansing formulations.

For conditioning-focused formulations, CAPB can be combined with ingredients such as Panthenol, Glycerin, Aloe Vera and Allantoin. In haircare, small amounts of Argan or Jojoba Oil can also complement the formulation when an appropriate solubilization/emulsification system is used.

  • Excellent Co-Surfactant: Works well with SCI, SLSA and other cleansing agents.
  • Hair & Scalp Cleansing: Suitable for shampoos and shampoo bars.
  • Facial Cleansing: Useful in gentle foaming facial cleansers and cleansing gels.
  • Body Cleansing: Suitable for body washes, hand washes and shower products.

Use

Cocamidopropyl Betaine is suitable for shampoos, shampoo bars, facial cleansers, cleansing gels, body washes, shower gels, hand washes, baby/gentle cleansing products, syndet bars and other rinse-off cleansing formulations.

For Beauty Resista, I would primarily position CAPB as a co-surfactant and foam booster for DIY shampoo, face wash and body-wash formulations rather than as a standalone skincare active.

Best Ingredients Pairing

CAPB + Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) → Gentle + Creamy Cleansing

SCI provides dense, creamy foam while CAPB acts as a complementary surfactant and helps create a balanced cleansing system. Excellent for shampoo bars and syndet cleansers.

CAPB + SLSA → Rich & High-Foaming Cleanser

SLSA contributes abundant foam while CAPB complements the surfactant system. Suitable for shampoos, body cleansers and high-foaming rinse-off formulations.

CAPB + SCI + SLSA → Complete Multi-Surfactant System

A useful combination for shampoo and cleansing bars where a balance between creamy foam, bubbly lather and cleansing performance is desired.

CAPB + Decyl Glucoside → Gentle Multi-Surfactant Cleanser

Combines amphoteric CAPB with a nonionic glucoside surfactant. Useful for facial cleansers, body washes and gentle cleansing systems.

CAPB + Panthenol → Cleansing + Conditioning

A particularly useful combination for shampoos and scalp cleansers. Panthenol contributes conditioning and hydration.

CAPB + Glycerin → Cleansing + Humectant Support

Glycerin adds humectancy and is useful in facial cleansers, body washes and hand washes.

CAPB + Allantoin → Gentle Cleansing + Soothing Support

A good combination for facial and body cleansers designed around skin comfort.

CAPB + Aloe Vera → Cleansing + Soothing Hydration

Suitable for gentle facial cleansers, body washes and scalp-care products.

CAPB + Argan Oil → Cleansing + Hair Conditioning

Useful in shampoo concepts where cleansing is combined with emollient hair care. The oil phase must be properly incorporated.

Best Beauty Resista Combinations

For a Gentle Conditioning Shampoo:

Cocamidopropyl Betaine + SCI + Panthenol + Argan Oil

This gives cleansing + creamy foam + conditioning + softness and shine.

For a Gentle Facial Cleanser, Beauty Resista would recommend:

Cocamidopropyl Betaine + Decyl Glucoside + Glycerin + Panthenol + Allantoin

This creates a more appropriate gentle cleansing + hydration + soothing concept for facial use.

For a High-Foaming Shampoo/Cleansing Bar:

SCI + SLSA + Cocamidopropyl Betaine + Panthenol + Mango Butter

This gives you three complementary surfactants along with conditioning ingredients.

Beauty Resista Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB) is a versatile amphoteric surfactant and foam booster widely used in shampoos, facial cleansers, body washes, hand washes and cleansing bars. It helps enhance foam, improve cleansing performance and create a milder, more balanced surfactant system when combined with anionic or nonionic surfactants. Particularly suitable for gentle rinse-off skin and hair formulations.
