Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate
A rinse off foaming agent .

Suitable for shampoo bars, syndet bars, facial and body cleansers, powder cleansers, bath bombs and foaming bath products.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate, commonly abbreviated as SLSA, is an anionic surfactant valued for its excellent cleansing, foaming and lather-producing properties. It is commonly supplied as a white to off-white powder or granular material and is particularly useful in solid and powdered cleansing systems.

SLSA produces a generous, bubbly lather, making it popular in shampoo bars, syndet cleansing bars, bath bombs, bubble bath powders and other high-foaming rinse-off products. It can be used as the primary surfactant in some formulations or combined with other surfactants to modify cleansing strength, foam structure and overall sensory characteristics.

One particularly useful combination is SLSA + Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI). SCI contributes dense, creamy foam while SLSA can increase larger-bubble lather and overall foaming performance. This makes the combination especially attractive for solid shampoo and cleansing bars.

SLSA can also be paired with an amphoteric surfactant such as Cocamidopropyl Betaine to create a more balanced surfactant system. Conditioning and moisturizing ingredients such as Panthenol, Glycerin, Allantoin, Argan Oil, Jojoba Oil, Shea Butter and Mango Butter can be incorporated according to the type of finished product.

Although SLSA is sometimes marketed simply as a “gentle” surfactant, the mildness of a cleanser depends on the total surfactant concentration, surfactant combination, final pH, contact time and complete formulation.

Because SLSA powder can generate airborne dust during weighing and mixing, formulators should handle it carefully and use appropriate protective equipment to minimize inhalation.

Best Ingredients Pairing

SLSA + Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) → High Foam + Creamy Lather
One of the best combinations for solid shampoo and cleansing bars. SLSA contributes abundant bubbly foam while SCI contributes dense, creamy lather and an elegant cleansing feel.

SLSA + Cocamidopropyl Betaine → Balanced Surfactant System
Cocamidopropyl Betaine is an amphoteric surfactant commonly used to complement anionic surfactants and modify foam and cleansing characteristics.

SLSA + Decyl Glucoside → Multi-Surfactant Cleansing
Useful where a nonionic surfactant is desired alongside SLSA for a more complex cleansing system.

SLSA + Panthenol → Cleansing + Conditioning
Especially useful in shampoo bars and hair-cleansing formulations.

SLSA + Glycerin → Cleansing + Humectant Support
Glycerin contributes humectancy and can improve the sensory characteristics of certain cleansing systems.

SLSA + Allantoin → Cleansing + Soothing Support
A useful pairing for facial and body cleansing formulations designed around skin comfort.

SLSA + Argan Oil → Cleansing + Hair Conditioning
Small quantities of Argan Oil can improve the conditioning concept of shampoo bars.

SLSA + Jojoba Oil → Cleansing + Lightweight Emollience
Useful for facial cleansing bars and balanced shampoo bars.

SLSA + Shea/Mango Butter → Creamy Solid Cleansers
Butters can contribute emollience and improve the after-feel of a cleansing bar. Excessive amounts can reduce foam and soften the bar.

For a High-Foaming Conditioning Shampoo Bar:

SCI + SLSA + Cocamidopropyl Betaine + Panthenol + Argan Oil + Mango Butter

Here, SCI provides creamy foam, SLSA boosts bubbly lather, Cocamidopropyl Betaine complements the surfactant system, Panthenol provides conditioning, and Argan Oil + Mango Butter contribute emollience and softness.

For a Gentle Facial Cleansing Bar, a better concept is:

SCI + lower-level SLSA + Cocamidopropyl Betaine + Glycerin + Allantoin + Jojoba Oil

This keeps SLSA as a foam booster while building the formulation around cleansing + skin conditioning + moisturized after-feel.

Important: SLSA and SLS are not the same ingredient. SLSA is Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate, whereas SLS is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. Also, fine SLSA powder can create airborne dust, so appropriate dust-control and respiratory protection are important during formulation.

Beauty Resista Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSA) is a high-foaming anionic surfactant used in rinse-off cleansing and bath formulations. It produces abundant, stable lather and provides effective cleansing, making it particularly suitable for shampoo bars, syndet bars, facial and body cleansers, powder cleansers, bath bombs and foaming bath products. SLSA is chemically different from Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS).
