Essential Oil Dilution Basics (Beginner Guide)
“Essential oils are highly concentrated. Always dilute before skin use. For face use: 0.5%–1% only. Patch test required. Avoid contact with eyes. For external use only.”
1) What is dilution?
Dilution = mixing essential oil (EO) in a carrier (like jojoba, almond, coconut, grapeseed, argan etc.)
✅ Essential oils are highly concentrated and should NOT be applied directly on skin (undiluted).
2) Why dilution is necessary?
Proper dilution helps:
- prevent burning / irritation
- reduce skin allergy risk
- avoid sensitization (long-term allergy development)
- make EO safe for daily use
- avoid eye damage + pigmentation worsening
3) Basic dilution chart (Most used for skincare)
✅ Face (Sensitive area)
- Quantity 0.5% – 1% with dilution recommended
➡️ Best for: sensitive, dry, acne-prone, pigmentation-prone skin
✅ Body
- Quantity 1% – 2% with dilution recommended
➡️ Best for: body massage oils, body lotions
✅ Spot application (only for short-term, not daily)
- Quantity 2% – 3%
➡️ For: localized concern (pimples, insect bite, muscle pain)
❌ Avoid high % on face
- 5% and above = not suitable for face DIY
4) How to calculate essential oil drops
Standard drop rule (approx.)
✅ 1 ml = 20 drops (average essential oil drop size)
5) Drop guide for dilution (Ready reference)
For 10 ml carrier oil
- 0.5% = 1 drop
- 1% = 2 drops
- 2% = 4 drops
- 3% = 6 drops
For 30 ml carrier oil
- 0.5% = 3 drops
- 1% = 6 drops
- 2% = 12 drops
- 3% = 18 drops
For 50 ml carrier oil
- 0.5% = 5 drops
- 1% = 10 drops
- 2% = 20 drops
- 3% = 30 drops
For 100 ml carrier oil
- 0.5% = 10 drops
- 1% = 20 drops
- 2% = 40 drops
- 3% = 60 drops
6) Recommended dilution by skin concern (general guidance)
Face acne / oily skin
✅ 0.5%–1%
(avoid harsh EOs daily)
Dryness / barrier repair
✅ 0.5%–1%
(only soothing EOs)
Pigmentation / uneven tone
✅ 0.5%–1% + sunscreen compulsory
Body pain / massage
✅ 2%–3%
7) Important safety rules for dilution
✅ Always follow:
- Patch test before full use
- Do not apply near eyes, nostrils, genitals
- Avoid broken skin
- Do not use essential oils daily for long periods (risk of sensitization)
- Store EO tightly closed, away from sunlight
8) Special groups (extra caution)
For babies/infants: generally avoid EOs in DIY.
9) Carrier oils matter
EO dilution must be done only in:
✅ carrier oils / butters (jojoba, almond, coconut, argan, olive, grapeseed etc.)
❌ DO NOT dilute in:
- water (EO does not dissolve)
- rose water alone
- aloe gel alone
- toner alone
(If needed, emulsifier is required.)
